US Vice President JD Vance said Washington was focused on securing Iran’s “long-term” and “verifiable commitment” not to rebuild its nuclear programme, while claiming the US had “in some ways decisively won” the war against Iran and destroyed its nuclear programme.

Speaking at a town hall hosted by CBS News, Vance said the focus was on preventing Iran from rebuilding its nuclear capabilities in the years ahead.

“Not over the administration of Donald Trump… but five years from now, could the Iranians rebuild that nuclear arsenal? Could they try to rebuild that enrichment capacity?” he said.

Vance acknowledged that “gas prices are too high right now” but said they would fall once the US-Israel war on Iran “is over”.

He blamed Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on tankers for driving up prices, saying, “We’ve never had a situation like this” in which one country was “trying to completely choke off world energy supply”.

Vance claimed petrol prices would be “three times as high if it weren’t for the US Navy keeping oil and gas moving out of the Strait of Hormuz”.
