Residents of the Saudi capital Riyadh received a mobile phone alert early on Sunday warning of a "hostile aerial threat", AFP reported. The alert was withdrawn shortly afterwards.

"Warning. The area is under a hostile aerial threat. Please remain calm, stay indoors or in a safe place away from windows and doors," it read.

Saudi civil defence later said the danger had passed in the southwestern cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait, near the Yemeni border.
