Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine has returned to the person who built it. In 2021, Candle Media acquired a controlling stake in the production company at a valuation of more than $900 million, a deal shaped by the peak of the streaming boom and the growing demand for premium, female-led stories. Five years later, Witherspoon has partnered with Paris-based Mediawan to buy the company back for a reported low- to mid-eight-figure amount, according to Axios.
The turnaround highlights how sharply the business of entertainment has changed. Hello Sunshine remains a major creative force behind titles such as 'Big Little Lies', 'The Morning Show', 'Where the Crawdads Sing' and 'Daisy Jones & The Six', but its new sale price is only a fraction of the valuation it once carried. Deadline reported that Witherspoon is investing alongside Mediawan and described the acquisition as a homecoming for the company she founded in 2016.
How Hello Sunshine built its reputation

Hello Sunshine began with backing from Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs through The Chernin Group. Its early focus was clear: create premium film and television stories centred on women, while also building a direct relationship with readers through Reese’s Book Club.
The company soon developed a strong catalogue. Its credits include 'Big Little Lies', 'The Morning Show', 'Little Fires Everywhere', 'Where the Crawdads Sing', 'Daisy Jones & The Six', 'From Scratch' and 'The Last Thing He Told Me'. Those projects helped Hello Sunshine become one of the most recognisable independent production companies in Hollywood.
Reese’s Book Club became equally important to the brand. Launched in 2017, the club reaches more than 6.2 million readers through its social and editorial channels, has driven roughly $900 million in United States book sales and has helped sell more than 60 million copies of its selected books in the country. More than 90 of its picks have reached The New York Times bestseller list.
Why Candle Media paid so much
Candle Media was co-founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. With about $2 billion in funding from Blackstone, the company pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy, gaining control of Hello Sunshine and buying Moonbug, the producer behind CoComelon, for nearly $3 billion.
At the time, streaming services were competing fiercely for subscribers and exclusive content. That created a favourable market for companies with established intellectual property, famous founders and loyal audiences. Hello Sunshine’s mix of Witherspoon’s influence, successful adaptations and a highly engaged book community made it a valuable acquisition target.
But the economics shifted soon after. Major streamers, especially Netflix, came under pressure from Wall Street to focus on sustainable profits rather than endless subscriber growth. As spending slowed, suppliers such as Candle Media faced a more difficult environment, while podcast platforms also reduced spending and made some of Hello Sunshine’s offshoot businesses harder to monetise.
Why the buyback price is lower
Los Angeles, Sep 27 (IANS) Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon is celebrating the 24th anniversary of her film ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, and is in complete shock that the time has flown by. She also expressed her gratitude to the late singing legend Dolly Parton for giving the film her track.
Axios reported that Witherspoon and Mediawan bought Hello Sunshine for low- to mid-eight figures, a fraction of the more than $900 million valuation attached to the 2021 deal. The company and the parties involved declined to comment on the reported figure.
The lower price does not erase Hello Sunshine’s creative value. It reflects a broader correction across the entertainment industry, where streamers have become more selective, media companies have pursued large mergers and smaller producers have faced pressure to reduce costs. Deadline noted that Candle Media’s debt burden forced it to depend on profits from its strongest properties, including Moonbug and ATTN:.
Hello Sunshine had also begun narrowing its focus before the sale. Earlier in 2026, the founders of The Home Edit bought their company back from Hello Sunshine, which had previously tried to build a wider portfolio of media and lifestyle brands. The latest transaction signals that Candle Media is moving away from its plan to build one integrated media company and is instead operating or selling individual brands.
Why Mediawan makes sense
Mediawan is a major independent content group with a global footprint. Founded in France in 2015, it now operates more than 100 production labels, including Kinetic Content, Wiedemann & Berg, Palomar, Drama Republic, Chernin Entertainment, Plan B Entertainment and See-Saw Films.
Its catalogue includes internationally recognised titles such as Adolescence, Slow Horses, Call My Agent!, F1, The Greatest Showman, Love Is Blind, New Girl and the Planet of the Apes franchise. The group’s strategy is to bring independent production companies together while preserving their creative identities.
For Hello Sunshine, Mediawan offers scale, international reach and access to a larger network of talent and intellectual property. For Mediawan, Hello Sunshine brings a distinctive creative brand and a direct audience connection through Reese’s Book Club. Mediawan chief executive Pierre-Antoine Capton said the acquisition strengthens the group’s ability to offer producers resources while maintaining their independence.
What the buyback means for Witherspoon
Witherspoon will remain closely involved in Hello Sunshine’s future. She said Mediawan has built a global independent studio by putting creators first, a vision she said has always guided Hello Sunshine. She also thanked Blackstone and Candle Media for their support and said the best is still ahead for the company.
Hello Sunshine says it will focus on premium film and television and Reese’s Book Club, while exploring new storytelling formats and distribution models. The company also plans to use Mediawan’s international production and distribution network to connect with audiences around the world.
The deal shows that market valuations can change dramatically, but a strong creative identity can survive a difficult cycle. Hello Sunshine may be worth far less than it was in 2021, yet its library, audience relationship and founder-led vision still give it an important place in the global entertainment business.
