• Tap water no longer drinkable in Norwegian town as climate-related thawing releases heavy metals

Residents of Longyearbyen, a remote town in Norway, have been advised to stop drinking tap water due to heavy metal contamination linked to thawing permafrost. The town, located in Svalbard, is warming at five to seven times the global average rate, causing the thawing of permafrost and exposing bedrock rich in pyrite, a mineral that oxidizes and produces acidity, leaching metals into the water supply. While manganese levels have dropped, other contaminants have exceeded recommended limits, leading to a ban on dri…

• Amelia Earhart researchers leave remote atoll empty-handed after ‘plane debris’ found to be a clump of trees

A US expedition searching for clues to Amelia Earhart's fate on the remote island of Nikumaroro has concluded, leaving behind a disappointing but significant discovery: a clump of trees mistaken for a plane. The expedition, led by Purdue University, spent four days conducting research and metal detecting, but found that the initial suspicion of metallic glint was likely due to a natural process involving a shiny concretized amalgam of coral sand. This discovery adds to the ongoing search for answers about Earhart'…

• England nature projects restore 4,800 hectares and plant 127,500 trees

A £25 million conservation initiative in England successfully restored 4,800 hectares of habitat and planted 127,500 trees, exceeding its original habitat target by nearly 30%. The Species Survival Fund, led by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, supported 20 projects across the country, including woodland creation, wetland restoration, and the recovery of rivers and coastal landscapes. The evaluation found that the projects extended beyond habitat improvements, connecting fragmented habitats and creating better c…
