Algeria has condemned the Colombian government’s decision to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem.

In a statement, the Algerian foreign ministry said the decision was the latest in a series of illegal attempts to alter the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and impose a fait accompli, in flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions.

The ministry said the “illegal step” would undermine the two-state solution endorsed by the international community, fuel conflict in the region and hamper efforts to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable peace in the Middle East.

Algeria renewed its call on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to shoulder its legal, moral and historical responsibilities and take urgent action to halt repeated policies aimed at imposing a new, illegal reality in the occupied Palestinian territory.
